Just One More Drive

The True Story Of A Stuttering Homosexual And His Race Car

The road to becoming an author was a path I never expected to take. But as someone who has stuttered since the age of eight, I have never felt like I ‘fit in’ and being gay too only reinforced that feeling.

Growing up in the 80s and 90s was difficult and lonely. I found safety and relief in cars. The race car in my book’s title, not only binds my story together, it literally saved my life and continues to inspire me to this day.

Just One More Drive: The true story of a stuttering homosexual and his race car is my journey of self-discovery through speech therapy, coming out and a failed suicide attempt before I could see that I was more than just my stutter or sexuality.

I am now proud of the person I have become and am passionate about sharing my story, so that others suffering in similar circumstances can see that they are not broken or alone.

What people say about ‘Just One More Drive: The true story of a stuttering homosexual and his race car’ –

“At its core this is a touching testimony of one man’s triumphs in his struggles, both of himself and for himself. It is, to use that much over used term, a “journey” on many levels and as you get to know him and how he thinks it will have you cheering him on, with every heart-warming page.” Paul Blezard review: Lovereading.co.uk

“Robert’s book was an excellent and engrossing read. His account of his life of coming to terms with and understanding of his identity as a gay man who stutters was an honest and authentic exploration. What stood out was the effect of suppression and masking of these identities could have on one’s life and the need to make up for lost time after coming out and how is one equipped mentally and emotionally when they are immersed in the communities of stuttering and LGBTQIA+ and wider society.” Stephen Green: Irish Stammering Association

“This book is told through the eyes of a young stuttering gay Irish man with a disarming honesty and a wicked sense of humour. However, under the relatable sci-fi references and wit, the author gives us so much more: he explains, educates, inspires, and shares his stuttering story.” Niall Walsh: Irish Stammering Association
